For those looking to find a good solution to creating an embeding 360 degree virtual reality panoramas into a wordpress press site you may find yourself considering Pano2VR. The Pano2VR application is a great utility for transforming 360 spherical projections into a HTML5 or wordpress ready packages. After a few weeks playing with the trial version I’d like to share some thoughts.
Pano2VR Review Overview
Pano2VR is a great tool for transformation zour spherical projections to a VR format. That said, you’ll still need a tool to create you Spherical projections like Kolor’s AutoPano Pro. The process of creating the HTML 5 VR files or wordpress packages is simple and fast. Even a novice can manage to create a great looking VR file in a few minutes time.
Version 4.5 feels a bit dated in terms of the user interface but it is scheduled for a nice refresh that will be released in the coming weeks. I had a change to play with the version 5 beta and I’m excited about the coming changes.
For those looking to integrate 360 VR into a wordpress site Garden Gnomes WordPress plugin is perfect. The plugin allows you to upload and insert VR files using wordpress short codes. This is a welcome feature as compared to FTPing directories of files up to a webserver.
While the tool is easy, the various options like adding control menus or changing from and HTML output to a wordpress package can be buried and take a while to find. The good news is you’ll find some decent support videos on the Garden Gnome site that will get up up and running quickly.
One of the features I found useful was hte nadir patching feature. This allows the photographer to use a little cloning magic in Photoshop or another similar post pocessing tool. In a few moments you can clone out a tripod at the Nadir point of the VR image.
The feature works by allowing you to zoom in on a view of the Nadir that includes your tripod. From this view, the user can export a tile of that scene. The tile can be edited in an external tool like Photoshop, an then imported back into Pano2VR and will replace the unsightly tripod. Check on the videos here.
It was quick and easy and anyone with asscess to Photoshop and a little knowledge of the clone tool can get great results quickly.
About 3 years ago I remember working to get some VR files integrated into an early version of wordpress when I was using the KRPano utility. Between the scripting and then uploading directories of files to my wordpress site it was a nightmare. I was glad I had an web design background to help me get through a bit of HTML to make it work well and integrate into my website.
Good news comes with this version of Pano2VR. The free wordpress plugin makes it as easy as uploading a zip file with the ggpkg extenstion produced by the software to your wordpress media library. Then from a wordpress post, or wordpress page a simple shortcode will get your VR files inserted. Simple, easy, and fast. Just the way I like it
If you are interested in some VR work and you want your files to be integrated in your own wordpress site and maintain full control the 69 Euro price for the Pano2VR license would be money well spent. If you don’t want to mess with something like Pano2VR you can check out options like using 360Cities but to get a similar experience with no 360Cities branding you’ll need to pay a high yearly fee for a pro account.
If you are interested but not sure, check out the trial version. The trial version offers all the same features as the licensed version with the limitation that all output files are watermarked, like the demo shown in this post.
